Ideally, we would like to have the Arts fully recognized, taught, and considered worthy of examinations, and thus careers in the Jamaican Schools. Initially the youth will benefit from this, but indirectly, the entire country will benefit, as with more educational options, our youth will engage in less dangerous and criminal behavior. In order to endeavour to bring about this change, we need to provide a strong group of people who are willing to see this committment through. This group should include the youth that these educational options will benefit. The challenge at hand is that a lot of the youth are not quite sure what "The Arts" really consist of.We need some ways of reaching out to the youth through the media, through one on one contact, through going into the classrooms etc.and educating and involving the youth in what the Arts really are, and how their options and opportunities can be increased by the addition of the Arts to their curriculum. My suggestion is the formation of a group of organizers who can see this through, and delegate this dissemination of information to (hopefully) our many members. Not being physically on the island, it is a little bit more difficult for me to be directly involved, but when have I ever turned down a challenge? We will need to have people writing to the media and relative Ministers etc. as well as recruiting members. Plus, I predict I will be visiting Jamaica periodically, and thus can do my 'visits' into the classrooms or wherever, on my 'visits' to Jamaica. However, the first thing I think we need to do is recruit adult members, and get as much input and help from them, and then we can all get organized and take it from there. Please respond to this initial "attempt at brainstorming". This is a committment, but look at the future rewards? FYI, in the near future I will post the matchstick that fanned the flames to get this started. Suffice it to say at this point, Marvette was and is very instrumental in getting this going. We are all in this together - so let's do it.
